Fresh ideas are vital to meeting the needs of our constantly changing society. Institute a three term limit for the Baltimore County Council to invigorate our leadership.
The current defined benefit retirement system for elected officials in Baltimore County is an unsustainable burden to taxpayers, and lacks parity with private sector compensation. Change the Pension Plan to a defined contribution system such as a 401k retirement savings plan.
I will help Northern Baltimore County remain as beautiful as it is now by limiting development. We also need to protect property rights by preserving the value of the land and stop forcing farmers into selling their land in order to survive. By supporting your local farmer you, too, can help keep our beautiful country setting in Northern Baltimore County.
I will be working closely with the Board of Education to make sure they have the resources they need to educate our children. Areas that I will be addressing with our educators are to better prepare our kids for the future through practical classes for day to day living, such as balancing a check book and other skills needed to make it in the real world; and to encourage the return of vo-tech programs to our schools for our young people who want to pursue careers in the trades.
I have a lot of respect for and look forward to working with our Police Department and Fire Departments, both career and volunteer. They are very important to the safety and well-being of our communities. We need to work with both departments to assure they have the equipment, training and resources they need to deliver the highest standards of service. The Baltimore County police and fire departments are among the finest in the country. The Council needs to provide the resources the departments need to grow and adapt to our changing times and technology in order to maintain those highest levels of safety and service in the future.
Baltimore County has thousands of miles of roadways, water lines, and sewer lines we need to keep in great working condition. The Council needs to focus on the weakest areas of that infrastructure. We must work closely with the City to upgrade our aging water mains. We depend heavily on our roadways to get us from point A to point B, and those roadways need to grow with our ever growing population. I plan to work closely with traffic engineering to pursue the best solutions to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
We must develop a plan to lower property taxes as the value of land goes down. The County Council says it hasn't raised the taxes yet, but it does take advantage of the values placed on peoples' property from the last assessment. We need to figure out ways to make it fair for people in these hard times. We, as citizens, must make sacrifices everyday in these hard times, and so should the government.
